Mary Elizabeth (Gutman) Beall

Our beloved Mother, Nana and friend, Mary Elizabeth Beall, entered God’s Kingdom of Heaven on December 4th of 2022. She was born on November 11th of 1932 to her parents, Leo Oliver Gutman and Mary Ellen Gutman in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from St. Mary of the Springs Academy before attending Ohio State University where she studied her lifelong love, music, and became a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She married James Joseph McCarthy Junior on September 6th 1952. She and James were blessed with six children all of whom she in turn blessed each and every moment of their lives. In 1960 Mary and James moved their young family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mary made Albuquerque her home the remainder of her life.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Joseph McCarthy III; her daughter, Mary Ellen Stanton; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte McCarthy; and three loving husbands, James McCarthy, Harold Anamosa and George Beall. She is survived by her children, Michael McCarthy and his wife, Frances; Julie Schreiber and her husband, Doug; Kathleen Gray; John McCarthy and his wife, Suzette; and her son-in-law, Mike Stanton. She has 16 grandchildren; Bill, Eric, Jeff, Becky, Mandy, Nicole, Trey, Katie, Michelle, Brian, Sarah, Jessica, David, James, Lillie and Shelby. She has 31 great grandchildren. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her “everything.” Each one of them was special to her. One of the ways she showed her love was by being there for births, baptisms, graduations and the many other special events in the family. She loved to bring this large family together to celebrate. She would often gather them in her home with the grace of a loving Mom and Nana for what everyone fondly called the “feasts.” She was always generous with her time and all that she had. Her family knew that she was always there for them to celebrate the joys and special events of life and also to confront the challenges with a grace that flowed from her faith and devotion.

It is difficult to imagine the world without her. She was strong, determined and carried on courageously and joyfully in the face of loss and obstacles. As a newly single mother of six children, she set her mind to the road in front of her and ventured into the workplace so that she could provide for her children and maintain her home. She created an atmosphere of love for her family and selflessly made her family her first priority. She had so much grace, generosity and persistence. She was kind to everyone and put the needs of others first with her grateful and big heart.

Mary later married Harold (Moe) Anamosa and they celebrated life together with their world travels, their mountain cabin and enjoying and visiting their newly extended family of fifteen children. After Moe’s passing, she later married George Beall. Together she and George continued to celebrate life and family. They not only built their own home but also built homes for others through Habitat for Humanity. Throughout her life she had many interests including a love of classic movies and music. She was an avid bridge player. Through all of these activities and interests she developed many lifelong friendships that she cherished and nurtured.

Mary had a deep and strong Catholic faith which she lived out daily in her love for her Lord, her family and friends. She lived her faith in everything she did and through every life she touched. She approached life with humor and a dry wit that endeared her to all. Her impact on the lives of those around her cannot be captured with words alone. Her beautiful smile and her example of living well, laughing often and loving much are her legacy. She truly glorified God with her life.

Viewing will be held at 5:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 15th at FRENCH-Wyoming. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 16th at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church. Donations can be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
