Martin F. Barker, born September 11, 1947, was called to Heaven on October 12, 2015 after a valiant struggle with cancer. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and friend. He was preceded in death by parents, Johnnie Barker, Sr. and Patricia Barker; brother, Johnnie Barker, Jr.; and beloved daughter, Christy Pat Barker. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Annette F. Barker; children, Francine Barker and husband, Christian, Tom Barker, and Maddie Barker; brother, Bob Barker and wife, Betty; sisters, Carolyn Madsen and husband, Larry and Maggie Barker; sister-in-law, Lynne Barker; and numerous family and friends.
Marty earned his BS in Civil Engineering & MS in Structural Engineering from UNM. His professional career in both the public and private sectors spanned 40 years. He was the 1977 New Mexico Young Engineer of the Year. He retired in 2009 from the City of Albuquerque as the Pavement and Materials Engineer. Marty was a devoted Catholic and active member of Annunciation Parish. In 2014, Marty and Annette received the St. Francis of Assisi Award from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
Marty was a car enthusiast; enjoyed travel, the outdoors and sharing a good meal with everyone. In July 2015, Marty and Annette celebrated their anniversary with a pilgrimage to Italy.
Marty was loved for his infectious smile, optimism, wonderful sense of humor, integrity, and generosity. His strength sustained family and friends through happy and difficult times. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Vianney Seminary, the Good Shepherd Center of Albuquerque, and Casa Angelica.
Rosary will be recited on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at 9:30 a.m., and a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont St NE. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers are John Chiado, Jr., Joe Chiado, Pat Chiado, Frank Chiado, Michael Chiado, Fred Wilson, Ted Wolcott, Alan Madsen, David Grebe, Eugene Urioste, Luis Lucero, Russ Morris, and Jim Miller.
