MARSHALL S. FLOYDPassed away peacefully, on Sunday, September 2, 2012 surrounded by his family. Before moving to New Mexico in 1950, Marshall served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the United States Marine Corp. He then worked as a silver miner in Silverton, Colorado. He then put himself through the University of New Mexico, earning a Bachelor's degree in Education and then a Master's degree in Secondary Education and Administration. He began his teaching career in 1952, as a Biology instructor at Highland High School. He remained at Highland for 48 years and was chairman of the science department there for several of those years. His dedication was acknowledged many times over these years; 1974: Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year; 1977: Distinguished Teacher in Recognition of Excellence by the NM Academy of Science; 1981: Science Teacher of the Year by the New Mexico Science Teachers Association; 1990: Award for Teaching Excellence from the Northwest, New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair; 1990: New Highland High School Science Building was dedicated and named the "Marshall Floyd Science Complex"; 1993: 34th Annual Northwest New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair was dedicated to Marshall Floyd; 1994: Outstanding Biology Teacher by the National Association of Biology Teachers; 1996: The Marshall Floyd Teaching Award was established as an annual award presented to an APS instructor; 1998: Highland High School holds "Marshall Floyd Day" His decades of effort on both local and regional science fairs was all as a volunteer. He served on the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union credit committee and supervisory committee for 32 years, also as a volunteer. Marshall Floyd was and continues to be, an inspiration, mentor and model to several generations of Albuquerque students. During his teaching career, he taught the children and even grandchildren of earlier generations of students. Humble and unassuming, his steadfast dedication to education, his students, and his community were an integral part of his identity. His dedication to his craft and his students over multiple generations has had a profound influence on the lives of thousands. He truly exemplified the motto: "I touch the future, I teach" He is survived by his loving wife, of 64 years, Hilda Floyd; his daughter, Lori Floyd; son, Richard Floyd and grandson, Greg Floyd. Friends may visit Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at French Lomas. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2012 at French Lomas.
