Marlene Mathis, age 78, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014. She is survived by her husband of nearly 45 years, David Mathis; nieces and nephews, David Ellis Staehlin, Robert Gene Staehlin, Anne Staehlin Steinmetz, Jerry Dean Staehlin, David C. Staehlin, Jone Staehlin Marten, Timothy Staehlin, Alan Staehlin, and Mark Staehlin; and several grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, August Robert Staehlin and Bertha Madelyn (Raymond) Staehlin; siblings, Raymond August Staehlin, Alfred Carl Staehlin, and Gene Robert Staehlin; and niece, Janet Staehlin Dwyer. Mrs. Mathis attended Immanuel Lutheran School (grades 1-8) in Albuquerque; Radford School for girls (grades 9-10) in El Paso, TX; and graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1954. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1960. Her military service includes Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI from July of 1960- October of 1960; NAAS Chase Field in Beeville, TX from November, 1960-December of 1962; COMFAIRHAWAII, Barbers Point, HI from December, 1962-January, 1965; NATTU, Pensacola, FL from January, 1965- February, 1968; CFB Shearwater, Nova Scotia, Canada from March, 1968-May, 1970; COMFOUR, Philadelphia, PA from May, 1970-October, 1973; CNET, Pensacola, FL from October 1973-May, 1976; NAVADCOM, Great Lakes, IL from June, 1976-July 1979; COMNAVPAC, Washington, D.C. from October, 1979-June, 1981. After retirement in 1981, Marlene was very active in several volunteer organizations, primarily military oriented, including WAVES National and Navy League. She and David discovered the pleasure in traveling via cruise ships and driving around the U.S., visiting all 50 states. Upon Marlene's retirement, she was presented with a flag that flew over the capital on her birthday (Flag Day) in 1981. Friends may visit FRENCH - Wyoming on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Services will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014, 10:00 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 Gold Ave. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
