Mark Hart Farrell, 67, passed away on February 16, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on February 21, 1957, in Dallas, Texas, Mark grew up in Lubbock and attended Coronado High School before earning his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University.
Mark's life was defined by resilience, passion, and an unwavering love for his family. At the age of 19, he suffered a life-threatening injury while working in the oil fields of West Texas. The accident nearly cost him his right leg and led to a year in a body cast, 28 surgeries over the course of his life, and ultimately the amputation of his leg. Despite enduring daily pain from that day forward, Mark never allowed it to define him. He graduated college on crutches, built a successful career, and wholeheartedly supported his wife through law school.
A devoted husband and father, Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Burgess-Farrell; his daughter, Margaret Hart Farrell; and his son, Richard Andrew Farrell (partner Avi Molder). He was also a cherished brother to Dr. Steven Farrell (wife Wendy), Jane Farrell, Douglas Farrell (wife Kina Klarin), and David Farrell (wife Dana Farrell). His nieces and nephews-Taylor Hill, Grant Farrell, Mallory Farrell, Miles Farrell, Elizabeth Farrell, Katie Farrell, Abbie Farrell, and Alysandra Burgess-held a special place in his heart. He shared a deep bond with his brother-in-law John Burgess (wife Heather Burgess) and was close to his aunt and uncle Judy and Clinton Smith, as well as his dearest and oldest friend Read Fowler. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George Farrell and Patsy Anne Hart Farrell.
Mark's adventurous spirit knew no bounds. After his amputation, he rode a bicycle across the United States from Seattle to Jacksonville with Amputees Across America. He also went skydiving, climbed in the Rocky Mountains, and traveled to the United Kingdom and Japan. His love for learning was insatiable-he was an avid reader who embraced every opportunity to expand his knowledge.
A passionate gardener and collector of ancient coins, Mark found joy in nature and history. He collected model airplanes and his knowledge regarding the same was extensive. He loved birdwatching and caring for animals. His optimism was infectious; he lived life fully and embraced every challenge with determination. Growing up in Lubbock, he spent time at his family's cabin in Eagle Nest, New Mexico-a place that captured his heart. After living in New Hampshire and the New York City area for a decade, he fulfilled his dream of making New Mexico his home.
Mark took immense pride in being the eldest of five siblings and adored his family deeply. His kindness, strength, and boundless enthusiasm for life will be remembered by all who knew him.
A service to honor Mark's life will be held on March 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM at French Funerals and Cremations, located at 7121 Wyoming Blvd., Albuquerque, NM 87109.
