Marjorie "Marge" Jean Johnston Oakes, 89, adored wife, mother, and grandmother, was called to her eternal resting place on Sunday, Dec 18th, 2022. She was born on Sunday, Jan 15, 1933 in Hilo, Hawaii. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Doug Oakes and his wife, Deborah, of Las Vegas, NM, Carol Torrez and her husband, Edmund, Ron Oakes and his wife, Tara, and Susan Caskey and her husband, Alan Osterholtz, all of Albuquerque; along with her 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Marge grew up in Hawaii during and after WWII and shared with her children and grandchildren many of those experiences including her detailed recollection of the events of Dec 7, 1941. She moved to Colorado to attend university and witness snowy winters. She graduated with her degree in Architectural Engineering as only one of two women in the engineering department. Following, she relocated to Albuquerque to work as an architectural engineer where she met, and married her husband Tom, and became a mother. She stopped working as an engineer and put her time into being a dedicated wife, mother, and community member. Her commitment to the community focused on volunteering activities to include the Girl Scouts, APS as an in-school volunteer as well as a member of various school advisory boards, All Faiths Receiving Home, and the American Vaulting Association. She was an Elder with First Presbyterian Church and was one of the founding members of A Child's Garden Preschool. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday Jan 14, 2023, at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque.
