SCANLON, MARIANGELA "MARI" Mariangela "Mari" Scanlon, age 83 died on June 18 at Presbyterian inpatient Hospice due to complications related to lymphoma. She was born on January 3, 1931 in Albuquerque to Italian immigrant parents Giulio and Giulia Menicucci of Lucca, Italy who precede her in death. Mari was a proud member of the Italian community that figured prominently in the history of Albuquerque in the 20th Century. She was married in 1956 to Jerry Scanlon of Dawson, New Mexico who survives her along with her seven devoted children and 18 grandchildren. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, Mari graduated from St. Mary's School in 1949 where she completed first through twelfth grades. She was a dedicated parishioner at St. Mary's, Fatima and The Newman Center, where a funeral mass will be held on June 28 at 11:00. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd NE. A reception will follow the burial. She leaves her children Giuli Doyle, Mesa Arizona; Robert Scanlon, Albuquerque, NM; Lori Hess, Leavenworth, WA; Patrick Scanlon, Viterbo, Italy; Eugene Scanlon, Albuquerque, NM; Steven Scanlon, Portland Oregon; and Eileen Espinosa, Chicago IL. Mari was deeply proud of her 18 grandchildren: Cory Murphy, Molly Murphy, Taylor Scanlon, Wesley Scanlon, Kaitlin Hess, Julian Scanlon, Simeon Scanlon, Mary Scanlon, Catherine Scanlon, Bailey Scanlon, Brittney Scanlon, CJ Scanlon, Kelsey Scanlon, Dane Scanlon, Paolo Scanlon, Sabrina Scanlon, Owen Espinosa and Aidan Espinosa. Several of those grandchildren were present when she died in order to comfort and console her. As was her way, she consoled those around her even more. Mari's life revolved around family and friends. She truly enjoyed the time she spent laughing and playing cards with her friends, many of whom she'd known since infancy. A testament to her skilled hands and an apt metaphor for her life, her garden was always in bloom. Mari prepared, cooked and shared meals as a supreme act of love. Besides the devoted family that she leaves, her legacy includes her recipes that her children and grandchildren continue to prepare and pass down in their own families.
