Marian M. (Barreras) Groman
January 8, 1930 — August 4, 2017
Marian Barreras Groman was welcomed into the divine presence of Our Lord on a beautiful Friday evening, August 4, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
Marian was born in San Marcial, NM on January 8, 1930. She grew up in the South Broadway area, graduated from Albuquerque High School, and received a degree from the University of New Mexico in 1953.
She was a teacher at East San Jose Elementary and Ernie Pyle Mid School, and was considered a role-model for educators. She made a lasting impact on students and colleagues. In 1982, she was the recipient of the Albuquerque Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award. This was one of her special joys and she said, “It’s really something when a South Broadway girl like me can grow up to receive such an honor.” She was recognized for her talent as a teacher and represented everything that makes for an excellent teacher. She had an ability to motivate young people to strive and fulfill their capabilities.
On July 10, 1965 Marian married the love of her life, Richard Groman, of Bethlehem, PA. He called her “the female Don Quixote.” Their joyous union blessed them with two beautiful daughters. Richard preceded her in death on December 13, 1979.
She was also preceded in death by her mother, Elicia Barreras Caire; her loving step-father, William Caire; her father, Marcos Barreras, who died shortly before her birth; and by her brother, Ben Barreras.
Marian is survived by her daughters, Alicia Groman (partner, Marshall Brumlow), Elizabeth Groman Mayger (spouse, Alistair Mayger); and grandsons, Davis Meiering, Dallis Meiering, Eric Mayger, and Connor Mayger. She is also survived by her sisters, Mela Beserra, Elisa Caire Vargas, Dorella Caire Perea (husband, Larry Perea); sister-in-law, Irene Barreras; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, August 11, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Risen Savior Catholic Community, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Davis Meiering, Dallis Meiering, Marshall Brumlow, Mark Meiering, Alistair Mayger, and Eric Mayger. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Vargas II, Larry Perea, Connor Mayger, Angela Delgado, Julia Suazo.
The family expresses kind and loving gratitude to the staff at North Ridge Alzheimer’s Facility and Kindred Hospice.
