Margarito, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather passed peacefully Thursday, August 18, 2022, one week shy of his 95th birthday. He has joined his recently departed wife of 74 years, Virginia, in heaven. Margarito was born Thursday, August 25, 1927, in Estancia, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan Cruz and Juana Maria Romero; six brothers, two sisters, and numerous family members.
Margarito is survived by his sons and their spouses, Amos and Margaret, Alfonso and Patsy, Arthur and Cindy, Anthony and Barbara, Adrian and Judy; Margarito’s brother Pedro Romero and wife Romie. Margarito had 15 grandchildren, their spouses, and 24 great-grandchildren.
Margarito attended Estancia High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Virginia Lucero. Margarito was a very talented athlete; he played all the sports but excelled in basketball. In 1947, Margarito was named Captain of the all District team and was picked to play as a member of the South team for the state all-star game. Margarito led the Bean Valley Conference in scoring his senior year, 23 points per game.
Margarito was active in our community, he was a founder and on the Board of Directors for the New Mexico Contractors Service Center. Margarito was also a founding member of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce (1975). Both designed to help minority and new business owners establish their business.
Margarito was a proud fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a founding member (1991) of council 10697, Our Lady of the Assumption. He served many elected offices including Treasurer for 24 years, he also served as Grand Knight.
As a council leader, Margarito led the effort every December to cook posole and red chile for the parish to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe Mass. His posole, chile, and carne adovada were unmatched and was always a treat!
Margarito had a strong work ethic, which he instilled into his 5 sons. Margarito retired from the DOE in1983, he worked two jobs most of his adult life. He was a great provider for his family. His love was never wavering. He was a great example to his family and exemplified a Christian man. He was generous and caring; he will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE.
Rosary will be recited Friday, September 2, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Mass Celebration, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 811 Guaymas Place NE.
Graveside will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming Blvd NE.
