Margaret Louise Vassallo, 82, long-time resident of Sandusky, Ohio and most recently living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, died peacefully June 16, 2014. Peggy was born April 26, 1932, in Mentone, Indiana and was one of three children of William and Ina Whetstone. She married and had six children with her first husband, the late William F. Groom. For most of her life, she was a single mother who worked tirelessly to care for and provide for her children. Peggy received incredible love and support from her brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Marie Whetstone, and her younger sister, Miriam Elias. Her many friends also took an active role in helping provide for the family, for which her children remain grateful. Peggy was a member of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and was employed by The St. Mary's Rectory in Sandusky, for 24 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J.Vassallo; her son, Peter M. Groom; her grandson, Cameron G. Baber; her nephew, Timothy J. Whetstone; and her youngest son Steven's companion, Deb Claar. She is survived by her five children: Cynthia Baber, Bill (Judy) Groom, Mary Beth Groom, Patricia (Steve) Ramsauer, and Steven Groom; four grandchildren; six nieces, and one nephew. It was her desire to be cremated, and her ashes laid to rest beside her husband, Don, and her son, Pete, at Calvary Cemetery in Sandusky. No immediate services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UNM Mariposa Pediatric Hospice, and sent care of UNM Hospital Development Office, Two Woodward Center, 700 Lomas, NE, Suite 100, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
