Mrs. Abbott passed away in Albuquerque, NM February 24, 2017 at age 91. She had lived in Albuquerque for almost five years at La Vida Llena.
She was born May 22, 1925 in Dallas, TX to Thomas Stanwaitie and Alva King Bell. She was raised in Vernon, TX. She attended Vernon High School and was a music major at Texas Tech University specializing in the organ. She was a member of Las Chaparitas/Kappa Kappa Gamma and was a faithful Red Raider supporter always.
She met William Gordon Abbott (Bill) as a flying cadet at Victory Field near Vernon in October 1941. They had a movie date on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day. They were married September 12, 1944 after Bill returned from flying 100 missions over North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
They moved to Hobbs, NM in 1951. She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1951, and past president of Hobbs Literary Club, Broadmoor PTA and Southern Heights PTA. She was a member of Hobbs Stock Club, Hobbs Better Garden Club, and the Hobbs Country Club. Bill and "Sport" enjoyed traveling the U.S.A., Europe, Asia and the Caribbean keeping up with family and old friends from their P-40 and 79th Fighter Groups. They had a loving marriage of 63 years until Bill passed away January 9, 2008.
Margaret Ann is survived by three children: daughter, Suzanne and husband, Michael Reaves of Denton, TX; son, Robert and wife, Kathy Abbott of Albuquerque, NM; son, James of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren; Robert and wife, Kristen Reaves of Coppell, TX; Mark Reaves of Dallas, TX; Molly Abbott Fine and husband, Jason of Albuquerque, NM; and one great-grandchild, Ethan Reaves of Coppell, TX. She is preceded in death by husband, William Gordon Abbott of Hobbs, NM; and grandson, Terrell William Abbott of Houston, TX.
Services for Margaret Ann Bell Abbott are scheduled for Friday, June 9, 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Hobbs, NM, and Reverend Greg Kennedy officiating. Memorials may be made in Margaret Ann Abbott's name to First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Snyder, Hobbs, New Mexico 88240.
