Marcus Hilton Smith, age 86, retired USN, left this life to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 27, 2019. Born in Stanley County, NC, the eleventh of twelve children, he left before graduation to join the Navy and served proudly for 24 years.
Preceded in death by his father, Millard Smith, and mother, Rettie Brattain Smith; eight brothers and two sisters. Marcus is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Troutman Smith; daughters, Teresa Hearne and husband Duane of Bella Vista, AR, Sharon Owsley and husband Wayne, of Grapevine, TX, and Joni Nyhlen and husband Peter, of Clinton, UT; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Louise Smith Barbee; and lots of family throughout North Carolina.
His loves in life were dedication to the Lord, wife, family, fishing, gardening, and doing for others wherever he could. He always made sure the feeders were full for his many birds. When the fruit trees were ripe, he shared with neighbors and friends. The most fun he had was passing on the art of making peanut brittle. Every batch was made with love and given away. He never let anyone leave empty handed.
