John 5:24 — Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my
word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into
condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Lyle Clayton Guynes went to meet his heavenly father on February 23, 2021 at the age of 99.
Clayton was born in Albuquerque on October 21, 1921 to parents Lola and Hardee. During high
school he worked at Barber’s grocery store to help support his family, but he always
remembered to set aside Christmas money to buy gifts for his brother Glynn and sister Anita. He
was especially pleased when he could buy an elegant watch for Anita one year.
Like many young men, Clayton served in the Army in WWII constructing the “Burma Road” in
what is today Myanmar. After returning from the Army, he drove a bus for Greyhound. He later
worked at Sandia National Laboratories for over 30 years where he served as the liaison
between the United States’ Atomic Energy Commission and the United Kingdom’s Atomic
Weapons Research Establishment and became known as a trusted colleague. He retired to
take on the role of full-time Grandad, his favorite job. He did his best work changing countless
diapers, driving to sports practices, and presiding over many sunny afternoon play times in the
yard.
An example of the gospel in action, Clayton would always give a helping hand to his neighbors
and provide a respite for those seeking comfort. He was known to be able to fix anything and
could often be found doing car or house repairs. Clayton will especially be remembered for his
posole, taking his family on drives up to Sandia Crest and trips to Latir Lakes, giving out a
seemingly endless supply of Tootsie Rolls, and his captivating stories.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patsy; his son, Gary (Cheryl) and daughters, Sheila
(Ron) and Jennice (Billy). He also is survived by grandchildren, Heather, Casey, Kirbi, Molly
(Kevin), Kevin, and Lane; and great-grandchildren, Chloe, Jacob, Tharon, Clayton, and Marin.
He has seven nieces, with a heartfelt thank you to three of them; Joyce, Sheryl, and Linda for
their unbounded love and care. He will join his parents, brother, and sister in heaven, where we
know they will welcome him gladly.
We would like to thank Harmony Hospice for their compassionate care.
Clayton will be buried at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Vaya con Dios.
