Luther Johnson, affectionately known as Papa or Pops, was the epitome of love, kindness, and family. A devoted husband, an extraordinary father, and a cherished grandfather, he passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025, at the age of 90. His remarkable life was not defined by grand gestures, but by the unwavering love he gave to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born in North Augusta, South Carolina, on November 25, 1934, to Luther and Carrie Johnson, Luther later moved to Augusta, Georgia, where he lived until enlisting in the United States Air Force. After serving with distinction for 20 years, Luther retired and made Albuquerque his home. It was here that he married the love of his life, Karen Dahl, with whom he would share 50 wonderful years of marriage. During his time in Albuquerque, he worked for both Albuquerque Public Schools and the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office as a law enforcement officer.
Luther was the light of our lives. A humble man with simple tastes, he had the rare ability to draw people in, offering acceptance and love to everyone he met. His family was his everything, and they returned that love tenfold. Known for his gentle spirit, Luther always looked for the best in others and had an innate ability to handle even the most difficult and emotionally charged situations with grace. His calm demeanor and steady presence were a source of comfort and strength to all who knew him.
As the heart and soul of his family, Luther led by example, teaching us all the true meaning of love, unity, and tradition. His deep affection for his family created an unbreakable bond, one that grew stronger through the years. He was passionate about celebrating holidays, especially Christmas, where "more was always better." A talented cook, Luther passed on his love for preparing meals to his children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories around the dinner table. Above all, Luther believed in the importance of standing together and supporting one another through every trial and triumph.
This year, Luther and Karen would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife Karen and four children: Lisa Johnson and partner Christine Martinez, Kara Johnson, Todd Johnson and wife Heather Johnson, and Ian Wade Johnson and wife Melani Johnson. He was also the proud grandfather of four grandsons: Michael Luther Johnson, Ty Braiden Johnson, Shawn Patrick Johnson, and Ethan Frederick Johnson. Survivors also include many loving family members in Georgia.
Luther's love of music was a constant thread throughout his life, and it will forever echo in our hearts. Whenever we hear his favorite songs, we'll be reminded of his joyful spirit and hear his voice in our souls. While it is incredibly hard to say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his love will continue to guide us. Until we meet again, we love you, Luther.
