Luis O. Chavez, born November 22, 1939 in Albuquerque NM, died Sunday, April 19, 2015, due to complications from a stroke. Luis, an Air Force Veteran, was a proud retired Lieutenant with the APD, serving for 25 years, followed by more than 20 years as a private investigator. Sports were a great passion for Luis, especially racquetball and football. He shared his passion of sports by mentoring young athletes through personal sports training, coaching YAFL Football, high school football with Highland, Manzano and Eldorado, in which he lead numerous freshman and Jr. Varsity teams to championships. He coached the New Mexico All-stars, and had the honor of taking them to play in a championship game in Australia. Luis passion for football carried through to the police department where he coached the Albuquerque Police Department football team. In addition to sports and physical fitness, Luis also enjoyed traveling, movies, animals, cars and planes. Luis is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Chavez and Carmela Romero (Baca), from Albuquerque, NM; step-father, Frank Romero from California as well as his son, Luis M. Chavez. He leaves behind his son, Christopher A. Chavez; daughter-in-law, Krista G. Chavez; son, Brian G. Chavez, fiancAC. Destani Gutierrez; grandchildren, Josh Chavez, Marcos Chavez, Brianna Chavez; sisters, Mary Martin, Dolores Eyman, Betty Jean Wenzel and Leilani Luas; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, April 28, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. There will be a public viewing from 5:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. with the Rosary immediately following. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 29, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Ave NE, Albuquerque NM. Graveside services will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
