A remarkable life has ended. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Lotte Harris-Fortag, has passed away after a long and fulfilling life at the age of 95 on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. Born Saturday, April 23, 1927, in Mannheim, Germany, to parents, Wilhelm and Berta Schumacher, she met the changes and challenges of life with inner strength. Lotte left her family and came to the United States as the first Kansas "war bride" in 1949 and was a proud military wife for over 26 years living in many U.S. states and Europe. She was a loving wife, and supportive parent to her children, and grandchildren. There was nothing she wouldn't do for them. She was fiercely independent, stubborn at times, but still young at heart.
Lotte was known for her grace and endless kindness and generosity to family, countless friends, and strangers alike. There was always a place at the family table for friends and visitors from around the world. No one could resist her welcoming home and delicious German cooking. She had an adventuresome spirit and traveled all over the world. She never let her health issues define her. She pushed through with amazing strength and courage. Everyone would agree she defied the odds with grace and dignity.
She loved African violets, a cocktail with friends, hummingbirds, chocolate, crocheting, playing pinochle, old westerns, flowers and more flowers, fishing, and the Denver Broncos. Lotte was an active member of the Daughters of the Nile and served as president of the Alhydaiya Committee for over 15 years. She was a 50-year member of the Women of the Moose and served as Senior Regent. Shriners Children's Hospital, Mooseheart, and Moosehaven were close to her Heart.
Lotte is survived by her daughter, Rositta and husband, Harvey; daughter-in-law, Bobbie; grandchildren, Ashley, Joshua (Callie), Shelly, Cody, and Tara; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Hiram and Ralph; and sons, Terry and William.
The family is so thankful for the loving care she received in her home from friends, Lucille and Dora, who treated her as their own mother. Thank you to Ashley, her granddaughter, who loved her grandma with all her heart and cared for her unconditionally. Also, thank you to Ambercare for their comfort care during her final days.
Although we are left with broken hearts, we will miss her every day and remember this beautiful and gracious soul with much love and joy.
Private services will be held at a later date.
