Lorencita Salas, 99, beloved mother, was called to her eternal resting place on March 20, 2017.
She entered this world on May 12, 1917 in La Joya, NM, born to Fred M. and Maria Romero. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard, and several close family members. She is survived by her seven children, Helen Lanata and husband, John, Florindo Salas and wife, Mary, Gloria Doerr and husband, Bill, Jim Salas and Maria, Virginia Salas, Richard Michael Salas, and Julie Salas and husband Clif; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren, with another due in April; and 1 great-great grandchild with another on the way; her brother, Eloy Romero; sister, Griselda Radosevich; and brother-in-law, Bryce Ekern.
Mrs. Salas was a retired school teacher. She taught in Socorro County Public Schools and Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic School. She retired from Annunciation Catholic School, where she taught for 30 years. She was a member of Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish, where she served as a Eucharistic minister, she was a Master Catechesis, and taught CCD classes after school for many years, helping the 2nd and 3rd graders to get ready for their First Holy Communion. She belonged to The Legion of Mary Sacred Heart League and was a member of the Lay Canossian Associates and others.
In 1985, Lorencita (Lorie) was named Catholic Teacher of the Year in the Santa Fe Archdiocese by the Most Reverend Robert Sanchez. Her citation read "she is a trained catechist who integrates her Catholic faith with learning and living."
She touched the lives of many, many young children and adults. She was a loving, caring, fair and understanding teacher who respected and loved all her students.
A loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was always ready to help her loving family and those who came to her for help.
A Rosary will be recited Friday, March 24, 2017, 8:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont NE. Interment will take place Saturday, March 25, 2017, 1:00 p.m. in La Joya, NM. Pallbearers will be Paul Lanata, Philip Salas, Cerro Johnson, Paul Salas, Andy Closs, and Louie Miranda. Honorary Pallbearers are John R. Lanata, Lorenzo Dodson, Brian Doerr, and Seth Doerr.
