Lois H. Harwick passed away on May 19, 2022. She was born on August 28, 1924 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Henry and Anna Hoover. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Henry. Lois is survived by her daughters Diana and Joslyn (Joe) and son Nevin (Heather), 3 granddaughters and 4 great grandchildren.
An exercise enthusiast, Lois walked 3 miles daily, undeterred by weather. Her mile long summer swims continued into her late 80s. At the Jersey shore, where she first went when she was 6 and many times thereafter, she floated on ocean waves for hours. Later in life, she took up boogie boarding, riding her last wave at age 89.
Lois loved her family, friends, church and community.
With family and friends, she shared her love of nature, reading and travel. She was always up for a game of Oh heck, bridge or solitaire, or even a board game. In person or on the phone, family and friends were greeted annually with a Happy Birthday serenade. Lois had a smile that warmed a room, and a kind thought for all she met.
Lois served her church throughout her life. She began as a Sunday school teacher and later she served as Director of Christian Education until her retirement at 75. Singing was her passion. She sang joyfully in her church choir and she could frequently be heard singing or humming in her daily life, bringing immense joy to herself and others.
She served her community as a teacher both before and after having her children. Her love was 4th grade, and she later taught preschool. Lois taught English as a second language to numerous immigrants in Hartford, CT, earning her the "Literacy Volunteer of the Year" award. She also tutored children in NM and CT. On her 39th birthday, she attended the 1963 March on Washington and attended two conferences that included the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. She lived her life independently and believed in equality for all.
Memorial services are planned for October 1, 2022 in Glastonbury Ct and August 27, 2022 in Albuquerque, NM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society in Lois' memory.
