Lewis A. Winston

September 20, 1929 — March 19, 2021

Lewis A. Winston born September 20, 1929 in Turkey, TX to John A. and Sudie (Vineyard) Winston passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021. Lewis had ten siblings who all went to be with the Lord. At 91 Lewis was a beloved father, grandpa and great-grandpa.

His journey to New Mexico began in his early teens where he wrangled wild horses, herded sheep, operated a logging truck and worked odd jobs supporting his simple lifestyle. As luck would have it, he met the Benjamin family in Magdalena, NM. He was welcomed into the family and raised as one of their own. Eventually Lewis enlisted in the Army serving two years from 1950-1952 during the Korean conflict. He was assigned to a gunnery division occupying West Germany maintaining freedom and peace in Europe.

Upon his return to the small town of Magdalena, Lewis met the love of his life Lily Armijo. They married and moved to Albuquerque to raise their family of four children. Lewis worked for a local freight company, after a few years he became an owner operator of eight trucks and trailers. He hauled produce to the East coast and dry freight to the West coast.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and being on the lake in his pontoon boat. Lewis enjoyed long conversations and relaxing with family and friends especially over a beer. He had a huge heart and never thought twice about helping someone in need. He was loved by all who knew him.

Lewis was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lily of 44 years. He is survived by sons, Wayne Winston and Solomon (Della) Winston; and two daughters, Carolyn (Gene) Montgomery and Marilyn (Doug) Morse. Additionally, he is survived by 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

His celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 2, 2021, 9:00 a.m., at Legacy Church Central Campus. A private ceremony is scheduled at the Santa Fe National Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers the family is asking donations be made to the VFW in Elephant Butte, NM in honor of his life.
