Leslie Ann "Lassie" Simms

d. May 5, 2016

Lassie passed from this world as she lived - on her own terms. On May 5, 2016, she died peacefully and suddenly with the sounds of hummingbirds and wind chimes coming through the windows. Lassie was 70 years old. She is survived by her parents, Albert G. Simms II M.D. and Barbara Young Simms; her children, Tomas A. Garza (Tag) and his partner, Cindy Wood, and Mary Margaret Garza (Molly) and her partner, Shaun Berry; her grandchildren, Mateo and Zaiya Garza who called her Birdie, and their mother, Andrea Myhre; her siblings, Mary F. Simms, Margaret C. Simms, Albert G. Simms III and Frank Y. Simms; her aunt, nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews who called her Tootsie; her children's father, Orlando T. Garza M.D. and his wife Jane, and numerous friends.

Lassie was a Registered Nurse and spent her life attending to the needs of others with compassion and grace. She loved her family and friends. She loved jokes, gardening, fishing, quilting, making pickles, red lipstick, giving advice, good manners, and shrimp cocktail. We always knew where to find her at a party. She would be next to the shrimp.

Per her strict wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. My mother disliked funerals and their trappings, and would hope for all of us to be happy for her and rejoice in the fact that she is free, and in a better place.

If you would like to do something in memory of her, please consider helping someone. An act of kindness or a donation to your favorite charity would make her smile. I have been searching for the right words of parting wisdom, but my mom did that for me. I found a scrap of paper in her kitchen, on which she wrote one of her favorite quotes from Helen Keller, whom she greatly admired. Let's honor her by living this way.

"The best and the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." I feel you, Mama. Forever and always XOXO
