Lea Elizabeth Herman Bernstein passed away on October 8, 2018 at the age of 98. She was born on August 6, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York, the second of two daughters of Russian emigrants. Lea is survived by sons Peter Bernstein and Marc Bernstein; their respective spouses, Debbie Erfer and Bonnie Bernstein, all residents of Albuquerque; and granddaughter Carley Bernstein, and husband, Christopher Feld, of Richfield, Minnesota.
Lea was married to Stanley Bernstein from 1947 until his death in 2011. Stan and Lea moved from Long Island, New York, to Albuquerque in 1973. She worked for the U.S. Farmers’ Home Loan Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Albuquerque Public Schools. She was a delegate to the 1948 Progressive Party Convention and a life-long advocate for women’s’ rights, civil rights and the rights of immigrants.
Lea's family would like to thank her devoted caregivers, Elba, Rebeca and Vivianna. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM. Donations to plant trees in Israel, through the Jewish National Fund, will be gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers.
