Lawrence T. Garcia

September 4, 1959 — August 24, 2017

Lawrence T. Garcia, age 57, beloved son, brother, uncle, was called to his eternal resting place on August 24, 2017. He entered this world on September 4, 1959 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his mother and father, Theresa and Larry Garcia; sister, Terri Garcia-Hanoumis and husband, Greg; brother, Steven Garcia, and wife, Renee; nieces and nephews, Ashley Kerns and husband, Michael, Cameron Romero and wife, Rachel, Taylor Garcia, and Avery Garcia; grandnephew, Thomas Kerns; and the countless friends, and confidants who were his family in California.

Lawrence attended Sandia High School in Albuquerque and graduated in 1977. He then moved to Los Angeles, California to attend the University of Southern California and graduated with his BA in Cinematic Arts in 1984.

Upon graduation, he became a production assistant at Steven Spielberg’s Amblin’ Entertainment, and worked on film production and development. He also helped produce and develop other projects while working at Amblin’ Entertainment.

As a screenwriter, he wrote and sold a fantasy-romantic comedy called "Harry Scarry Wants to Marry" to Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment. He was commissioned by Warner Brothers to also screen write various projects.

In the late 1990’s Larry began working with Academy Award Nominated Director Spike Jonze to help him develop critically acclaimed films, award winning commercials and music videos for various musicians.

After working with Spike Jonze at Propaganda Films for a few years, he worked for Gravity Entertainment as the Vice President of Development. There he developed and oversaw film production. His latest work was chairman at Broken Glass Films, Strategic Dreamers, and Associate Producer at Avalon Family Entertainment.

While working and developing films, he also worked at NBC’s The Voice at Universal Studios. He worked with an incredible team and got to work in midst of his favorite place every day. The amount of photos that we have come across with him around sets and playing with props or hanging out in the “back-lot” is astounding. He loved what he did and where he got to work and play every day.

Larry loved movies and the entire entertainment industry. He was at the movie theater at least three times a week seeing film after film. He didn't stop there; he also loved performances on stage. Larry was always fascinated by a compelling story whether on screen, stage, television, or in the company of friends or family.

He was loved by so many people across many states, and within many families. He created an incredible network of friends who were family in California in the 37 years he lived there. Larry also came back home to his immediate family in Albuquerque for major holidays and celebrations every year. While his time was quick he made the most of it when he was home.

He had a smile that could light up any room and literally any one person who met him could tell you that. His kindness was unmatched and he lived larger than life. He will be immeasurably missed, but we know he is with us in spirit, and his heart was something to special live by.

There will be two Memorial Services in his honor. The first will take place in California, on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Fiesta Hall, 1200 N. Vista St, West Hollywood, California 90046.

The Albuquerque Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 3:00 p.m., at FRENCH - Wyoming.

In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been set up in his name at the University Of Southern California School Of Cinema. Larry was incredibly proud of USC and naming a seat or bench in his honor would be something he would really love.
