In loving memory of a true American hero, Ret Lt. Col. USAF Lawrence (Larry) Wilton Berger, who was born on September 23, 1933 in Long Island, New York, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on March 21, 2024. He dedicated a major part of his life to serving his country with honor and courage. Having graduated from the prestigious Naval Academy in 1956, he embarked on a distinguished career in the military as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Airforce while pursuing a Master's of Science in Aerospace Engineering. As Lieutenant Colonel, he bravely flew B52 Bombers, C130 Cargo planes, and F4 Fighter jets as he piloted through the skies during the tumultuous times of the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the Airforce in 1978, he pursued a career as a Financial Advisor for Waddell and Reed.
Larry was proceeded in his death by the love of life of 76 years, Lois Cecilia Berger, his parents Wilton William Berger and Mary Ruth Berger, daughter Sheree Berger, and granddaughter Kristin Wyatt. He was survived by his children Connie Levy (husband) Kevin and Larry Berger, grandchildren Danielle Gutierrez, Amy Dutailly (husband) Thomas, Mandy Paulson (husband) Will and great grandchildren Danielle and David Wyatt, Alice Dutailly, and Aurora Paulson.
Beyond his remarkable achievements in the armed forces, Larry will forever be cherished as a devoted husband, a loving father, a doting grandfather and great grandfather. He was an avid golfer, loved horse racing, playing pool, and enjoyed many other sports to include college sports where he claimed they played with the most heart. He was the rock upon which his family's foundation stood, offering unwavering support, guidance, and unconditional love to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
His legacy of selflessness, integrity, and unwavering dedication will continue to inspire all those whose lives he touched. Though he may have taken his final flight, his spirit will forever soar in the hearts of those who had the honor of calling him family and friend. Rest in peace, dear Larry, your memory will forever be a guiding light for us all.
Larry's funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Annunciation Parish on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 10:00 am with a reception to follow at The Albuquerque Country Club. The interment will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, April 15, 2024 at 2:00 pm.
