Lawrence Allen

July 27, 1928 — March 23, 2014

Lawrence Allen, known as Red to his family and friends, was born on July 27, 1928 in Minden, Louisiana and passed away on March 23, 2014. Red moved to New Orleans as a teenager and met Harriett, his wife of 63 years, at a church social welcoming the incoming class of nursing students at the Baptist Hospital Nursing School, of which Harriett was a member. Red worked for the railroad, like his father. While working and raising a family, Red returned to school and upon graduation, he was employed by Sinclair Oil. He transferred to Albuquerque in 1961, in what he always said was one of the best moves he ever made. He worked for ACF and then began his career at Sandia Laboratories in 1967. He retired in 1994. Red was a long-time member of Hoffmantown Baptist Church and taught fifth-grade boys' Sunday School for 19 years. He loved his Lord, family, sports, newspapers, bargains and telling wonderful stories of growing up in Northern Louisiana, living in New Orleans, and working on the railroad. Red is survived by his wife, Harriett; brother, Joe and his wife, Louise; sisters, Jean Hooper and Mary Plonsky and her husband Bobby. His parents, Lawrence and Vivian, and his sister, Anne Ivankovich predeceased him. He is also survived by his son, Larry; and his daughters, Vivian Avalos, Laura Greenway and Carolyn Wolf and her husband, Aaron; his grandchildren, Megan and husband Mark, Russell, Rebekah and husband Mousa, Sarah and husband Eric, Lawrence and fiancée Bianca, Michelle and husband Steven, Kayla, Victoria, Madison, Laurel and Ella; and his great-granddaughter, Rafeef. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis TN 38105 or Joy Junction, P.O. Box 26568, Albuquerque, NM 87125.
