Laura Ann Kammerer passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016 in Albuquerque, NM after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was 61.
Laura was born in Gettysburg, PA on March 1, 1955 to Richard Eames Kammerer, Sr. and Nancy Abigail (Weaver) Kammerer. She grew up on the family farm in Hunterstown, PA, near Gettysburg. After graduating from Gettysburg High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science degree in anthropology from the University of South Florida. While in graduate school, participation in an archaeological field school at the British Fort on Mackinac Island set her career path. She worked with an archaeological consulting firm in Tampa before taking a temporary field archaeology position at the Mission San Luis Archaeological Site in Tallahassee in 1990. The following year, she joined the staff of the Compliance Review Section at the Florida Division of Historical Resources. Within two years, she was supervisor of that section. Before her retirement in 2013, she served more than twelve years as one of Florida's three Deputy State Historic Preservation Officers. She was a dedicated public servant. Although her job was primarily a regulatory one, she committed herself and her staff to assisting constituents through the requirements of state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations.
On June 29, 2010, Laura wed her longtime companion and best friend David Ferro. She and David enjoyed travelling and sharing several unique hobbies, including: volunteering on bricks and mortar historic preservation projects with the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, restoring a 1918 Model T Ford and participating in tours and other activities with the Tin Lizzies of Albuquerque, conducting and participating in NARCOA rail motorcar excursions in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Pennsylvania, and exploring the natural and historic resources of the Southwestern US.
Laura was a beautiful caring and giving individual who had a wonderful sense of humor. She and David were true soulmates, often finishing each other's sentences. Laura loved her family very much and especially cherished her relationship with her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her brothers, Alfred Kammerer (Marcella) and Richard Kammerer, Jr. (Deborah); her sisters, Jane Wenger (Henry) and Catherine Kammerer; her nieces, Melanie Kammerer, Phoebe Kammerer, Nancy LaRochelle (Bryan), Laura C. Kammerer, Lindsey Bream (David), and Susan Ritter (Mark); her nephews, William Kammerer and Edward Wenger (Andie); and her loving husband, David.
The family wishes to thank Laura's many special friends who provided support and encouragement during her illness, especially Susan Harp and Barbara Mattick of Tallahassee, FL, William J. Lock and the family of Roland D. Soto, Sr. of Albuquerque, Paul and Marilyn Duncan of Albuquerque, Terry Bridges of Marietta, GA, and Robin Wright of Clearwater, FL.
