With loving memories and sadness, the family of Larry L. Emarine Commander, U.S. Navy Retired, announce his passing on November 29, 2024. He was 86 years old. Larry was a resident of Albuquerque since 1981. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Lester and Dorothy Emarine. He graduated from Compton High School in California in 1957. Larry had a distinguished 31-year career in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. He served on three destroyers, a cruiser, and had command of a minesweeper. He was a Vietnam Veteran who spent three years stationed there on land or by sea. He had three Staff assignments, Office of Chief of Naval Operation, Headquarters Pacific Fleet Command, and Staff Commander Seventh Fleet.

He enlisted in the Navy Reserve while in high school. He was selected for Office Candidate School and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1962 after graduating from San Jose State University. He retired in 1988 after serving his last tour of duty at Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency on an Inspection Team that traveled the world. He was highly decorated during his Naval career. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, and two Bronze Stars all with Combat Stars for his service in Vietnam.


Larry always loved to learn and teach and has two master's degrees, a bachelor's degree, and two associate degrees. Both of his master's degrees were from the University of New Mexico. He also spent four years teaching Naval Science at the NROTC unit at UNM during the 1970's. He was a long time and loyal UNM Lobo fan who enjoyed watching the men's and women's basketball teams at The Pit and Lobo football. He was an avid runner, hiker, and outdoorsman. One of his proudest accomplishments was when he ran and completed the 1978 Honolulu Marathon while stationed at Pearl Harbor.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years Mare A. Emarine. Larry is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Emarine and wife Laura, Michael Emarine, grandchildren Chelsea, Joshua, and Hannah, and his fiancé of many years Darleen Gee of Sedona, Arizona. He had three siblings, sister Judy Vincent and husband Johns, brother Ralph Emarine and wife Beverly, and brother Bruce Emarine.

Larry and Darleen traveled through out Europe and the United States for many years. Larry always said she was the greatest tour guide and traveling partner! Darleen is a retired Department of Defense overseas schoolteacher who taught in Germany for over 30 years.

A visitation will take place Monday, December 16 at 11:00am at French's Funeral home located at 10500 Lomas Blvd NE. A private interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UNM Cancer Center.
