LaRoy Knott was born September 15, 1930, to Roy and Dollie Knott. He passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2022.
After graduating from Eunice High School, LaRoy attended the University of New Mexico (UNM) and received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. At UNM, he met the love of his life, Edith. They married in 1954 and would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in September 2022.
Family was the center of his life. He fiercely loved Edith and their children, Michael, Teresa, David, and Anne. He welcomed each new addition to the family from Rob, Anne's husband, to his grandchildren, Shelby, Matthew, Kevin, and Lauren. Along the way he adopted Andre and Margaret Chacon, dear friends and neighbors.
LaRoy served in the U.S. Air Force and Reserves before joining Atlantic Oil and Refining Company (ARCO) as a drilling engineer. He worked for ARCO for almost 30 years moving from the San Juan Basin near Farmington, NM, the Permian Basin near Hobbs, NM, and the Anadarko Basin near Tulsa OK. In 1985, he retired and in 1987 relocated to Albuquerque, NM with Edith and David.
Returning to Albuquerque, LaRoy quickly became a member of the gaggle of retirees who played golf regularly at courses in and around Albuquerque. Being outside, playing golf was just one of many ways that he enjoyed the great outdoors. Over the years, he hunted birds and larger game. He loved exploring the National Parks with Edith, their children, and grandchildren. After retiring, he took up photography and enjoyed hunting wildlife through a camera lens. One of the highlights for him was a photo safari through Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp in South Africa.
He had a wicked sense of humor, and you could tell by the glint in his eye when he was about to share his wry sense of humor. He was quick with a quip and loved to tease those he loved.
LaRoy is survived by his wife, Edith Knott; his sister, Martha Farris; his children, Michael Knott, Teresa Knott, David Knott, and Anne Terry; son-in-law, Robert Terry; grandchildren, Shelby Knott, Matthew Terry, Kevin Knott, and Lauren Terry; grandson-in-law, Aaron Proett; and many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nelta Whitley.
