LaRee Shirey lost an 8 month battle with cancer on New Year's day, January 1, 2016. She left this world on her own terms, surrounded by the family she cherished. LaRee was born May 31, 1941 in Clearfield, PA, to Russell and Kate Luzier. She and husband, Dave, moved to Albuquerque in 1962, raising two children, Jacki and Chris.
In addition to being a loving and nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she enjoyed a 35 year career with APS, serving as executive secretary and bookkeeper at Jefferson, Hoover, and Desert Ridge middle schools. For many years, she also served as bookkeeper for her church, St. Stephens UMC, where her stewardship was inspirational.
LaRee had extraordinary instincts, touching the lives of friends, co-workers and family members in so many positive ways. In her middle school offices, her work ethic and holiday decorations were legendary. She and husband Dave rarely missed a UNM Lobo basketball or football game. And, being an avid fan, she never left until the last play was run.
LaRee was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Vernard, of Woodland, PA. She is survived by childhood sweetheart and husband of 55 Years, Dave; daughter, Jacki Huntsman and husband, Bob; son, Chris Shirey and wife, Liz ("she was an amazing mother-in-law"); grandsons, Christopher and wife, Suzanne; granddaughter, Victoria Everett and husband, Greg; grandson, Jeremy; granddaughter, Emily; and great-grandson, Hunter. All reside in Albuquerque except, Jeremy of Boston, MA. "Grammy" was fiercely devoted to her four grandchildren. She left indelible, loving imprints on all.
