Born on June 2, 1922 in Wurzburg, Germany. He left Germany in November 1938, emigrating to the U.S. via England. He arrived in Portland, OR on Valentine's Day, 1939 and lived with friends of his family. He attended high school until it became necessary to work to help support his parents who came to the U.S. from Germany via England. Kurt worked in retail businesses and completed high school at night. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and served as an interpreter and a POW guard in Germany, Belgium and Holland in an MP unit until the end of WWII. He later worked for Sears for 30 years until his retirement in 1984. Kurt met Mary Ann Joseph in 1943 and they married in 1948 in Portland, OR. He enjoyed golf and bridge and learned stained glass work immediately after retirement. His windows can be seen in some homes and a church in Lakewood, WA. He was chair of the Tacoma SCORE chapter and the manager of the Seattle SCORE District. After moving to Albuquerque in 2001, he volunteered at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History in the fossil works and as a greeter. He was a member of Congregation Albert. Kurt is survived by Mary Ann; daughters Jan Lehmann-Shaw and her husband John Shaw of Albuquerque, Carolyn Lehmann of Denver; grandchildren Kathryn Shaw of Colorado Springs, Doug Shaw of Crested Butte, CO. , Bryan Epstein of Tel Aviv and Derek Epstein of Irvine, CA. A service will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 11:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Animal Humane of New Mexico, www.animalhumanenm.org , or Congregation Albert, www.congregationalbert.org .
