Kenneth Gordon Grant

d. November 16, 2021

Kenneth Gordon Grant passed on November 16, 2021 at home after a long and wonderful life. He was born on May 6, 1935 in Jay, ME. After graduating from Edward Little High School in Auburn, ME, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard in March of 1954. He proudly served on the USCGC Acushnet (WMEC-167), White Heath (YF-257), and the Humboldt (WHFC-372), and was honorably discharged at the rank of 2nd Class Electrician.  After his enlistment, he used his GI Bill to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA, where he received his Electrical Engineering Degree.  In March of 1962, he moved to Albuquerque, NM to accept a position at Sandia National Laboratory (SNL).  While working for SNL he met the love of his life, Ida Burch.  He retired after 32 years as an Electrical Engineer in Plant Engineering.  Ken was an avid outdoorsman and athlete.  Throughout his life, he enjoyed skiing, camping, golfing, fishing, duck hunting, and for a time ran marathons.  More recently, he enjoyed staying active by going to Silver Sneakers at Defined Fitness on Juan Tabo.

A love for hockey resulted in over 15 years of volunteer work with local teams.  He was as Penalty Box Keeper for the Albuquerque Six-Guns, Albuquerque Chaparrals, and the New Mexico Scorpions, followed by several memorable years with UNM's Men's hockey team.  Ken was not only a beloved father, but grandfather and great-grandfather.  He did his best to never miss any of his grandchildren's sporting events.  He often traveled year around, across the city, to attend soccer, basketball, and hockey games, as well as swim meets.  One of his great joys were fishing trips with friends and family, from the San Juan River to Alaska, and being able to teach his grandchildren to fish at Fenton Lake and the Ice Pond in the Jemez Mountains. Ken is proceeded in death by his parents, Herbert and Eleanor Grant; his sister, Martha Goodwin; son, Travis Ryan Burch; and son-in-law, James Carney.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ida L. Grant; daughters, RoxAnne Carney of Auburn, CA, Winterfawn Rey of Ignacio, CO, Revae and husband Edgar Briggs of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Garrett W. Briggs of Ignacio, CO, as well as Breanne L. Trujillo and husband Francisco M. Trujillo; and great-grandson, Logan M. Trujillo; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He also leaves behind a cherished friend, John Formea and his beloved dog and shadow, Dolly.   The family is asking for donations to be sent in Ken's memory to Ducks Unlimited or the Animal Humane Association of New Mexico.  The Funeral Service will be held Monday, November 29, 2021, 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Lomas.  Interment will be in Santa Fe National Cemetery.
