Kathryn Jones

Kathryn Jones, age 97, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018. She was born at Fabro's Ranch south of Gallup, McKinley County, NM on March 1, 1921. The family moved to Amarillo, TX when she was five years old. She completed high school there, attended Amarillo Junior College and received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration at West Texas State College. She later attended the School of Social Work at the University of Oklahoma and received her master’s degree in social work at the University of Southern California. Kathryn worked for the Amarillo Garage and Storage, Radio Station KGNC, and the Young Women's Christian Association in both Amarillo, TX and Wichita, KS. Later she returned to the Gallup area and worked for the McKinley County and San Juan County Welfare Departments and McKinley County Family Consultation Service. She was selected to be the Certified Social Worker of the Year for the Gallup area in 1961. She was honored as one of three local women listed in the 1968 edition of Who's Who of American Women.



In 1976 she received a position as Agency Social Worker at the Eastern Navajo Agency, Bureau of Indian Affairs, in Crownpoint, NM. In 1986, when the Navajo Tribe took over the Social Services program from the federal government, Kathryn was transferred to the area office in Window Rock, AZ to assist in monitoring the Tribal Program. She served as President of the Gallup Business and Women's Club and Gallup Soroptimist club. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the National Association of Current and Retired Federal Employees, and the League of Women Voters. She was honored as a Pioneer Social Worker in the Navajo Area in Window Rock in 2005. She retired in 1988 and moved to Albuquerque where she has since lived. Kathryn was again honored as a Pioneer Social Worker at the New Mexico State Conference of Social Workers in 2009 in Albuquerque. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and active in women's groups.



She was preceded in death by her parents, Manson and Eunice Jones; brothers, Boyd and Manion Jones; sisters, Margaret Coble and Mildred Jones; nieces, Jan Sharon Coble and Gwen Sutton. She is survived by nieces, Ramona Davis of Provo, UT, Cheryl Gadish of Tempe, AZ; and 38 great-nieces and nephews. Interment with a Tree of Life will take place at Central United Methodist Church at a later date.
