JULIA ARDEN MCINTOSH, PHD.
Julia Arden McIntosh, aged 63, passed away at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Wednesday, April 21st. Julia was born December 22nd, 1957 in Denison, Texas. Julia was pre-deceased by her loving parents Wayne (stepmother Hazel) and Joan (nee Martin, stepfather Will Heidorn) McIntosh. Julia is survived by her brother Wayne (Pamela Hartman) McIntosh, sister Susan McIntosh, sister Stacy (Ricky Lawrence) Tiner, and brother Scott (Nadine) McIntosh. Julia had no biological children but had deep affection for her nieces and nephews: Anastasia Tiner, Samuel Tiner, Joseph Tiner, Sarah Mackenzie, Peter McIntosh and Mark McIntosh.
At the time of her death, Julia worked as a Clinical Psychologist employed by the Bernalillo Public Schools. Julia earned her PhD from the University of South Carolina after completing her BA at the University of New Mexico (also the site of her doctoral internship) and MA from Xavier University. Education was central to Julia's life. "Doctor Julia" was a licensed school psychologist that valued her own continuing education and relished sharing her knowledge and experience to nurture, inspire and mentor a multitude of children, families, and colleagues, always with the goal of helping children achieve their best lives. Her educational background, practical intuition and depth of experience combined to drive an unwavering advocacy for all of her "kids."
Julia appreciated nice things. She often said, "life is too short for cheap shoes." While she often lived this appreciation on a personal level, Julia also extended that appreciation in her giving to others. Getting a gift from Julia was special because of the thought she put into the act of giving. That giving of the perfect gift acted as a metaphor for the way she lived her life, whether manifested in receiving her time, compassion and talent, or some tangible, perfectly chosen item. Knowing Julia invariably meant appreciating Julia's gift for helping others and for teaching so many how to perpetuate the cycle of giving through their own service to others.
A memorial service is planned for those wishing to pay their respects. It will take place at the Bernalillo High School football field on May 7th, 2021 at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to BEST, a non-profit reading camp for children.
