Resilient, independent, thoughtful, funny, and caring are only a few traits that describe Judy. Judith "Judy" B. Hansen, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away suddenly on October 12th, 2022, at age 81.
Judy was born in New York to Steffie and Henry Corenza. She grew up with her brothers, Danny and Mike, in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens and later moved to Westbury. She attended W. Tresper Clarke High School, where she served on student council and demonstrated her athletic prowess in track and field and basketball. Following high school, Judy attended State University of New York at both Farmingdale and Albany and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. During her college years, she met and married Richard "Rick" Beckmann, and this union ultimately brought her to Albuquerque, where she raised her daughter, Kristin, and fell in love with the Sandia Mountain views.
Judy set down roots in Albuquerque by becoming part of the New Mexico tennis community. She taught lessons, played in numerous tournaments, and at one point was a highly ranked player in the Southwest. She was also passionate about bringing the joy of tennis to people who use wheelchairs. In the late 1970s she served as Adaptive Recreation Coordinator for Bernalillo County, where she researched other wheelchair tennis programs in California and Hawaii and successfully brought a program to Albuquerque. Always an athlete, after her tennis years, Judy became an avid golfer and found every opportunity to play a few holes with friends and family. Judy was also devoted to rescuing her many family pets over the years, which inspired her to become a longtime volunteer for Animal Humane New Mexico. Notably, she cherished her tenure at the Animal Humane Thrift Shop.
Judy's greatest source of pleasure, however, was her family, especially her two grandchildren. She was immensely proud of the people they were becoming and their accomplishments. She was always eager to hear the latest news from their lives in California.
Judy is survived by her daughter, Kristin (Kevin); grandchildren, Tanner and Emily; brothers, Danny Corenza and Mike Corenza; and her sweet dog, Juno.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for later this year. Donations in Judy's name are welcome to Animal Humane New Mexico, 615 Virginia St. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 or online at
