Joseph Yardumian

d. May 9, 2016

Joseph Yardumian passed away peacefully on May 9, 2016, after a battle with Alzheimer's and cancer. Joe was known for his kindness, his sense of humor, and his love for the United States. It was his honor to serve in the Air Force during the Korean War, and to help mankind achieve space flight with his work on the Atlas program. He had a brilliant mind, and was well respected by everyone from the international intelligence community to his neighborhood communities in Southern California, Fairfax, VA, and Albuquerque.
Joe, the son of Avedis and Mabel Yardumian, is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jean Black Yardumian; his daughter, Michele, a teacher at DATA Charter School; his son, Rob and wife Sara of Portland, OR; and his grandson, Dashiell Tanaka Yardumian. Joe is also survived by his sisters, Leona Donian and Evelyn Durgarian; brother-in-law, Norman Black; and his many nieces and nephews and their children, of whom he was very proud. He will be greatly missed by his rescued cat and best buddy, Bella.
Joe was an engineer and nuclear physicist who worked for General Dynamics, TRW Systems, and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He served as a liaison to Interpol, and worked tirelessly to protect his beloved country from terrorist threats. Joe and Jean retired to Albuquerque in 1997, where they have been active in the Association of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO). Joe has also served terms on the City Planning Commission, the Arts Board, and ten other voluntary community service organizations. Joe was a good friend and neighbor, and will be missed by all who knew him.
