Jose Rey passed away peacefully on December 27, 2018, with his family by his side. Jose was born on January 19, 1924, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Marcial and Maria Esparza Rey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; brothers, Marcial Rey, Luis Rey, and John Rey; and sister, Susana Chacon. He is survived by his sister, Theresa Valdez (Luis); children, John Rey (Rochelle), Patricia Sisneros (Benny), Joseph Rey (Clara) and Jeanette Rey; grandchildren, Jeffrey Rey (Holly), James Rey, Greg Montoya (Stephanie), Jackie De La Rosa, Juliana Nuanes (Beau), Marciano Apodaca, Mark Sisneros (Natasha), Daniel Sisneros, Eric Rey, Rebecca Sisneros, Justin Rey (Austin), Josette Duran (Mikal), and Jessica Rey; 31 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces and his companion, Lucille Gonzales.
After graduating from Albuquerque High School, he went to work in the shipyards in Bremerton, Washington. He joined the Navy in 1943, serving on the USS Condor Mine Sweeper. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as Director of Customer Service after 34 years.
Jose was a devout Catholic and served in various ministries including Marriage Encounter, Marriage Enrichment, Cursillo Movement, Weekend of Christian Living, Emmaus Journey, Eucharistic Minister, 25 years as Minister to the Home Bound, Prison Ministries, Fiesta Committee at San Felipe de Neri, 14 years at St. Vincent de Paul and Parish Council for which he received the "St. Francis of Assisi Award".
After retirement, he and Virginia ministered in Los Colonias near San Carlos Sonora, Mexico, as Eucharistic Minister and church Lector. Jose continued his service with Los Ranchos de Los Ninos Orphanage until December 2013.
A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, January 3, at 7:00 p.m. with a Visitation at 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH – University, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, January 4, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande, 5901 St. Joseph Dr. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith NE.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Rey, James Rey, Mark Sisneros, Daniel Sisneros, Eric Rey and Justin Rey.
