Jorge Eloy de Armas

Jorge de Armas, age 89, passed away Friday, April 1st, 2022, in Albuquerque, NM. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved good food, Spanish wine, and a lively game of dominoes. Jorge was born December 1st, 1932, in Colon, a city in the Matanzas province of Cuba. His parents were Hector and Rafaela de Armas. He had two older brothers, Hector Jr., and Julio. Jorge married Adelfa Valdes Silvestre in 1958, and son Jorge Alberto was born in Havana, Cuba in 1960. In 1961 the family came to the United States as Cuban refugees. A few months after arriving in New York City, daughter Maria del Pilar was born. Jorge, Adelfa, and Jorge Jr. became US citizens in 1968. The family lived in New York, New Jersey, Texas, and for a period of 8 years in Madrid, Spain. Jorge's years in Spain were some of his happiest. He enjoyed traveling and he loved the people, the language, and most especially the food and "el vino tinto".

Jorge graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and had Professional Engineering (PE) licenses in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas. He had a long career in the design and construction of electrical generating facilities, both nuclear and fossil fueled. He also did some work in the design of oil refineries and petrochemical plants. Notably, Jorge was one among the crew of engineers who rushed to the 3 Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant in Pennsylvania to avert a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1979. After retirement, Jorge continued working on mechanical engineering projects. One such project was an invention that he patented in 1999 called the "Electromagnetic-Coupled/Levitated Apparatus and Method for Rotating Equipment". Another project that he started working on over 20 years ago was one he called "Parasol". Jorge was deeply concerned about global warming and resulting climate change. He would write in his paper titled, "How to Reverse the Earth Global Warming Trend" that the "effects of runaway global warming on human society and other living earth organisms will be catastrophic". Jorge was prolific in writing letters to political and business leaders urging action.

Jorge is survived by his children Jorge Alberto and Maria del Pilar, son-in-law Mark Ladd, grandson Matthew and his wife Cari, grandson Jonathan and his partner Lauren, and great-grandson Bodhi.

Jorge will be laid to rest next to his wife Adelfa on May 20th at Remembrance Gardens, 4214 Capital of Texas Highway North Austin, TX 78746.
