Jonathan Dunn

March 30, 1951 — March 11, 2024

Jonathan Edwin (Jon) Dunn, 72 years of age, passed peacefully Monday, March 11, 2024 in Albuquerque, New Mexico after a long struggle with dementia. Jon was born on March 30, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio to William Edwin Dunn and Luciele Bennett Dunn. The family relocated to Albuquerque, where he was raised. Jon attended Highland High School and before graduation moved to Norman, OK where he finished high school, and then graduated from the University of Oklahoma. There, with cherished friends, Jon was Alpha Sigma Phi and gained his lifelong love for the Oklahoma Sooners football team.

Jon moved to Las Cruces, NM and began his career as a medical technologist, later returning to Albuquerque where he retired in 2011. Every December Jon faithfully returned to Las Cruces, never to miss his friends and “The Gobble..…”. Along with his Boomer Sooner dedication, Jon was a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians . Jon had a lifelong passion for Anthropology and Archeology, and he was a volunteer at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, where he liked to brag that he was a history museum exhibit, as he cleaned fossils while visitors watched.  Jon immensely enjoyed spending time in the outdoors and one of the joys of his life was time spent fishing in Alaska with his son, Andy, and in New Mexico with the Trout Masters. When outdoors he was always fascinated by clouds and collecting rocks, fossils, leaves and feathers, and always returned with his pockets filled with interesting “finds”.  Jon’s great loves included many lucky dogs and cats who he spoiled with happy hours of ear scratching. Jon will always be remembered by those who knew him best for his intelligence, wit and sense of humor. He enjoyed time with his wife, Sarah, watching Jeopardy (always knowing the obscure answers), playing Acey Ducey (and always enjoyed beating his wife), listening to good old rock ‘n roll, and he could not get enough of silly puns and jokes.

Jon is greatly missed by his wife of 18 years, Sarah Elizabeth (Toler) Dunn, his son Andy Sunn, his wife Sahra and beautiful granddaughter Satya of Albuquerque, his sister Nancy Leslie and her husband Ken of Las Vegas, his bonus children Amy Goplerud, her partner Denae Almaraz, of Colorado and, Matthew Goplerud, his wife Kala and their sons Kason and Jaxon of Maine.

Jon did not wish to have a formal memorial but would prefer friends and family raise a glass and remember the good times. On his behalf, the family is asking that donations be made in his memory to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science at 1801 Mountain Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87104. The family wishes to recognize and thank the dedicated staff who care for those in need of memory care, and especially the loving staff at Clare Bridge/Brookdale Tramway Ridge and Luna del Valle Hospice for the excellent care and support that they extended to both Jon and Sarah most recently.
