Jonah Avery Hanks passed away on August 4, 2024, at the young age of 30, after a courageous yearlong battle with colon cancer. He passed at home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on June 29, 1994, in Albuquerque, NM, Jonah was the cherished son of Gretchen and Chris Hanks and a loving big brother to his sister Sydney. From a young age, Jonah's kind and easy-going nature made him a magnet for those who had the privilege of knowing him. His infectious smile and gentle spirit brought joy to everyone around him.
Jonah excelled both in the classroom and on the field. As a child, he displayed his talents through chess, piano, and cello, but it was in sports where he truly shined. Soccer was his first love, and he proudly played for teams like the Corrales Chameleons, Alameda Avalanche, and Rush 94. He later captained his soccer team Eldorado High School. Though he had a deep passion for soccer, Jonah eventually dedicated himself to swimming, where he set numerous state relay records with his high school team and local clubs. His dedication extended beyond the pool as he worked as a lifeguard and beloved swim coach at the Tanoan Country Club.
During his time at Eldorado, Jonah was a natural leader, holding several student senate positions and serving as Senior Class Vice President. His classmates recognized his charisma and warmth, electing him as Prom King and Prince of the Homecoming Court. Jonah had a unique ability to make everyone feel included, filling any room with his light and laughter.
After graduation, Jonah attended the University of New Mexico. He eventually discovered his true passion while restoring his beloved Mini Cooper. This newfound love for cars led him to become a skilled, self-taught German Auto Technician, a role he proudly took on at Hans Wittler's Automotive.
Jonah was a young man of many interests and talents. He was a foodie who loved experimenting in the kitchen, an art and design enthusiast with an eye for fashion, and a proud owner of an impressive shoe collection. In his final months, he found solace in CrossFit, climbing, fishing, and target shooting. Even as his illness progressed, Jonah's passion for life never waned-he spent his last days watching Olympic swimming and soccer competitions, two sports that had always held a special place in his heart.
Jonah is survived by his devoted parents, Gretchen and Christopher Hanks, his beloved sister Sydney Meeks, her husband Guy, and his loving grandparents, Dixie Hanks, Juanita Carr, Ken, and Andie Hanks. He also leaves behind his aunts Racheal Carr and Britta Hanks, uncles Ron Hanks, Steve Hayden, William Gray, Dustin Whitener, Patrick Hanks, and James Carr, along with numerous cousins, great aunts, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Jonah's life was one of love, kindness, and a deep belief in the goodness of people. Though his battle with colon cancer was fierce, Jonah held on to the hope of recovery until the very end. His family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Jonah's name to Swim Across America, a nonprofit organization that raises money for cancer research and clinical trials. By contributing, we can continue the fight against the disease that took Jonah from us far too soon.
Services to honor Jonah's life will be held on August 20th at 11:00 AM at Calvary Church on Osuna. Jonah's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
