Johnny Lee Montgomery, D.D.S, was born November 2, 1942, in Hobbs, New Mexico to Ulman Garrett (Monte) Montgomery and Ruby Lee Montgomery. He was active in Boy Scouts of America, earned the Eagle Scout Award in 1958 and worked summers at Philmont Scout Ranch. Johnny graduated from Highland High School in 1961 and attended the University of New Mexico on a tennis scholarship. A graduate of Baylor University College of Dentistry in 1969, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force in Anchorage, AK, then practiced dentistry in Albuquerque New Mexico 1971-2015. Johnny married Betty Janet (Jan) Wagenschnur, in Dallas Texas. They have 3 sons, David Garrett Montgomery; Michael Lee Montgomery, wife Kristen and children-Lukas Mykael, Grace Alexandria (Lexi), and Noah Lee Montgomery; Patrick Scott Montgomery, wife Heather, and daughter Haiden Cafiero; and sisters Carolyn Posey, and Sue Montgomery,
Johnny was active in the Albuquerque District Dental Society, New Mexico State Dental Association, American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Lobo Lettermen's Club, United States Tennis Association, the Enchanted Lens Camera Club, S.A.S.S. (Single Action Shooting Society), Zia Rifle and Pistol Club, and Oak Ridge Sports Association and the Bulldogs and Bullets Rimfire Range in Madisonville, TN.
Hobbies included: hunting, fishing, archery, target shooting, camping, coaching boys' basketball and soccer, photography, bagpipe music, travel, and collegiate sports.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Albuquerque, NM, then attended Christian Center, became a member of Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church 37 years, then Hope Evangelical Free Church, in Albuquerque. He attended Bible Study Fellowship, Community Bible Study and moved to Knoxville, TN. and attended Calvary Chapel Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by parents, U. G. and Ruby Montgomery and brother, Monte Gene Montgomery.
Johnny and Jan moved to Knoxville, TN, June 15, 2021.
For friends in Knoxville, a Celebration of Life is planned for January 13 @ 1:30 p.m. in The Peaks Chapel in The Lodge at Shannondale. 801 Vanosdale Road, Knoxville, TN 37909
The Memorial Celebration of Life Service for Johnny Montgomery will be in Albuquerque, NM on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna Rd NE, Albuquerque NM 87109. A reception will follow in the Hub.
Interment has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque, NM.
