John was born December 10, 1917 in Port Chester, NY, and died July 28, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM. He was the son of Robert D. Thomson, professional golfer, and his wife, Rhoda Beard Thomson, both from Montrose, Scotland. John was a Sea Scout, Eagle Scout, and worked for the Baltimore Mail Lines Shipping Company, then joined the Merchant Marines. He began his education at Johns Hopkins University, and following WWII graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served his country in the armed forces, 29th division of 115 Infantry, Army Air Corp, 383 bombardier Squadron, Barksdale Field, Shreveport, LA, which relocated to Albuquerque NM at the newly developing Kirtland Air Force Base, where he was an Air Craft departure and approach controller. He served as a Warrant Officer on a 104 ft. PT boat, #252, 131st Army Air Force Rescue, assigned to duty in New Guinea and the Philippines. Following the war, he returned to Albuquerque to work with the Army Corps of Engineers, the engineering group at Kirtland Air Force Base, before his final career post with the Federal Government, the Fish and Wildlife Department. He is survived by his daughter, Irene Rose Thomson Cooper; his son Robert Thomson and wife, Adrienne Larkin, and their son David Larkin-Thomson; his younger son Greg Thomson, and companion, Laurie Thomas; and Greg's two sons, John Thomson and William Thomson, all from Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence I. Page Thomson, and his grandson Colin Larkin-Thomson. Services will be held on Monday, August 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.
