Dr. John Neufeld, 90 years old, who loved the Lord Jesus, went to be with Him on Saturday, June 3, 2017. He was brought up in Winnipeg Manitoba in a Mennonite family and community. He studied Medicine and received his doctorate there. Upon graduating in 1953 he married his sweetheart Lena Luisa Janzen. He did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Detroit Michigan which eventually opened the door for his career in Albuquerque New Mexico at Lovelace Bataan Hospital, where he worked for 34 years. Known as a giving man on many levels he was very generous with his medical expertise. Friends and relatives remember him calling to ask after health and offer help and advice. He was appreciated by patients for his compassion and professionalism. He brought security and peace to many through his confident medical knowledge. He was respected by colleagues for his knowledge and experience as well as for his view of the sanctity of life. He lived out the verse, “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands (1 Thessalonians 4:11)” behind the scenes.
He was known for loyalty. He was a faithful member of Grace Church for more than 50 years, attending whenever the church doors were open. He was passionate about missions and committed to intercession. So many individuals and ministries felt his private giving. He and Lena attended any prayer meetings at church and, especially after retirement, prayed daily and specifically for many ministries and missionaries. This was in addition to their constant prayers for their large family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Lena, and three children, Karen, Lorie and Matthew and their spouses and his daughter-in-law Cindy (predeceased by his son Mark), 12 grandchildren and their spouses, as well as 8 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Margaret and brother Ernest and predeceased by his brother Nick. He leaves many well-loved nieces and nephews too.
He was easy to like and enjoy for his humor. His impatience became endearing and the source of more humor. He loved nothing better than to be surrounded by his family. His heart was glad in the love and unity that the family had for each other. He loved to sing, especially in worship of the Lord Jesus. He became a patriotic US citizen in 1976. He remained attached to his Mennonite and Canadian roots making annual visits to nurture family ties.
His legacy of faith, generosity and faithfulness is a great source of honor to his family. He has finished the race well (2 Timothy 4:7), and his family takes up the torch he passes.
A funeral will be held on Friday June 16, 2017 at 11.00 a.m. at French – Wyoming, 7121 Wyoming Blvd NE.
