John Thomas McGuffin, 74, was born on April 22, 1943 in Portales, New Mexico to Reverend V. Elmer McGuffin and Edna Culpepper McGuffin. He graduated from Aztec High School in Aztec, New Mexico in 1961. He served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1967 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Science from the University of New Mexico. While attending UNM, he was active in student government and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity where he served as a leader among his peers.
In 1980, John married Susan Morse and they welcomed two children together. John was a dedicated and loving father and husband and was very involved with his children. He received his Master’s Degree in Science from UNM and worked as an Electrical Engineer for companies in Albuquerque, to include Honeywell and Boeing. After divorcing in 2008, John expanded his horizons and took up screen writing and enjoyed creating various plays.
In 2009, John was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and defied the odds by battling and surviving well past what the doctors expected. John succumbed to his ongoing illness on December 9, 2017.
John is survived by his mother, Edna McGuffin-Thompson, 99; his sister, Jene Grantham and husband, Ron; son, Michael McGuffin; daughter, Catherine Offret and husband, Dustin; and granddaughter, Avery age, two. John was truly loved by many and will be remembered by his family as a dedicated son, mentor, and father.
Services for John will be held Friday, December 15th, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Chester T. French Mausoleum, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
