JOHN CLAUD HOFFMAN 11-14-1945 to 1-17-2022
John C. Hoffman, along with his twin sister, Jeanne, was born on November 14, 1945 at St. Joseph Hospital on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Albuquerque, NM. They were the youngest additions to the family, making him one of seven children born to Claude and Lela Hoffman. John liked to say he had three twin sisters, since his oldest sisters were twins along with his very own twin sister.
John was an amazing man and from the age of 2 or 3 he knew that life was not going to be a spectator sport. He quit school when his father became incapacitated by Parkinsons Disease and as a 15-year-old he took his Dad’s place working for J.W. Lewis, a local electrical contractor. From J.W. Lewis he went to Amrep in Rio Rancho wiring the first houses built “way out there.” From Amrep he went to Southwestern Electric where he stayed until he decided to start his own business in 1977 and Hoffman’s Electric was born, which he successfully ran for the next 45 years.
At the age of 17 he and one of his buddies, Ronnie Follis, followed a fire truck to see where it was going. It was a haystack fire and the boys being big and strong were recruited by the firefighters to help carry the bales out. After the fire was out, they went to the fire station to fill out paperwork and just like that Bernalillo County Fire District 2 had two new volunteers. John stayed with them for the next 23 years ….. 15 years as Chief.
He was active in Associated Builders & Contractors serving as president for 2 years. He was a state commissioner with Construction Industries Commission under Governor Gary Johnson for eight years serving as Chair for seven of those years. He was a member of Civitan International for over 30 years. He was an active member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for 30 years serving as the Albuquerque Chair for two years, state chair for four years and regional chair for six. He became an Imperial Habitat Partner in 2017.
He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in the Brazos and served on the Board of Directors of the Brazos Mutual Domestic Water Consumers Association for 18 years (yes of course …. serving as president).
You didn’t have to guess at where you stood with John. If you asked him a question you better hold onto your hat because you’d get an answer. He was always the first one in line to help anyone who needed it even if they weren’t aware they needed help. He never turned his back on a challenge. Whether it was a water leak in the Brazos or a plug with no power he’d figure it out and he’d fix it. And he never expected you to work harder or longer than he did. His passions were cruising, snowmobiling, hot air ballooning, and elk hunting.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and April Hoffman, two grandsons, Alexander and Jacob; two sisters, Maxine Jenkins and Jeanne Butler; dear sister-in-law, Ruth Hoffman; nieces and nephews, Sandy Boyer, Janice Gordanier (Floyd), Kent Boyer (Charlotte), Mark Boyer (Gretta), Catherine Kitterman (Everett), Marilyn Maito (John), Kenneth Moseley (Linda), Rick Jenkins (Jean), Judy Follis (Bob), Steven Hoffman (Renay), Karl Hoffman, Lynn Yount (John) Raymond Hoffman, Karen Fenn (Ted), Nancy Childers (Buddy), Alan Guinn (Rachel), and Connie Orona (Manual); his longtime companion, Twila Donaldson; and also, many great-nieces, great-nephews, and many lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Lela Hoffman; sister, Mary Guinn; brother, Dwight Hoffman; and twin sisters, Zella Boyer and Della Moseley.
