John (Jack) Edward Elder passed away on October 8, 2015 at the age of 74. He was a native of Albuquerque and a lifelong resident. Jack was a proud graduate of Eugene Field Elementary, Washington Mid-School, Albuquerque High School and University of New Mexico, where he majored in Business. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity.
His career as a mortgage banker began in 1962 with Mountain States Financial Corporation. He later worked at Albuquerque National Bank (Boatmans, Nations, Bank of America) and Rocky Mountain Mortgage. During his banking career he was President of New Mexico Mortgage Lenders Association and served the Association at the national level.
He served as President of the Albuquerque chapter of UNM Alumni Association and was a loyal supporter of UNM academics and athletics.
Jack was a true sportsman and coach. He loved playing, watching and coaching football and was a lineman at Albuquerque High as well as a Young America Football coach and organization President. The family cabin outside of Pagosa Springs, CO, was where he found true bliss. He loved fly fishing, hiking, camping, sitting on the deck enjoying the view, the hummingbirds and the grandkids, especially with family and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, R.M. and Dorothy (Goelitz) Elder; brothers, Thomas and William Elder (Beulah, deceased); and sister, Jane Elder Carlson. He is survived by his sister, Anni Kellogg Elder; wife of 53 years, Judy (Windom) Elder; son, Scott (Deborah) Elder; daughter, Janet (Christopher) Burks; grandchildren, Caitlyn Burks, Samuel Elder, Amanda Burks, David Elder and Taylor Burks; and he will be greatly missed by his good dog, Rosie.
Jack was a genuinely kind, decent and honest family man. In retirement he spent many hours taking APS students to the PTA Clothing Bank and, later, helping deliver Assistance League clothing vouchers to schools with children in need. He was an enthusiastic volunteer at his grandchildren's schools' fundraising stores and, while his eyesight was still good enough, he rarely missed a soccer game, play, volleyball or basketball game, band or orchestra recital or other grandkid-related event. If he did have to miss it he wanted to hear all about it later.
In honor of both his love of sports and the loyal and caring teammates and friends who made the last months of his life so much more bearable with their visits, memories, jokes and support please consider donations to AHS Football in lieu of flowers. Checks can be sent to 800 Odelia Rd NE, 87102.
A Memorial Service for Jack will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015, 11:00 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 10,000 Spain Road NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to wear "Lobo Red" to the memorial service.
