Age 84, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, beloved wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was embraced by the Lord and taken to her heavenly home on Saturday, November 24, 2012. Joan was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty and Peggy Ann; and her beloved son, Brian Allen Ayers. She is survived by her spouse of 63 years, Oscar Ayers; children, Linda Terrell and husband, Dave of Earlysville, VA, Larry Ayers and wife, Fran of Edgewood, NM, Peggy Ayers and Eric Romero of Albuquerque, Roger Ayers and wife, Irish of Albuquerque, and daughter-in-law, Cathy Kunin Ayers; brothers, Howard Kirk and wife, Frances and Robert Kirk and wife, Polly. Her extended family includes six grandchildren: Erica Ayers, Ryan Ayers, Bethany Haughton, Estevan Romero, Erica Romero, and Ben Webb; and two great-grandchildren: Robert and James Haughton. Joan loved landscape, portrait, and still-life painting, and she was an accomplished artist in each of these areas. She enjoyed travel and visited Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal, and various regions of the Atlantic Ocean. She also did extensive travel within the contiguous USA. Joan had a long list of long-time friends. She loved both square dancing and round dancing, and she was selected as the Square Dance Queen for the Albuquerque District in 1979. She devoted tens of thousands of hours to volunteer work with the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Albuquerque for more than 30 years. She was a member of Hoffmantown Church and taught numerous Sunday School classes for youth throughout her life. The family requests that no flowers be sent, but donations may be made in her name to any reputable Veterans charity. A Memorial Service for Joan will be held Sunday, December 16, 2012, 3:00 p.m., at FRENCH - Wyoming.
