Jimmy C. Torres

James (Jimmy) Torres, beloved husband, father, grandfather, "Poppy", uncle, brother-in-law, father-in-law, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. A resident of Albuquerque since 1948 and Tijeras, NM since 1976, Jimmy was born near Hatch, NM on January 12, 1945. Growing up in Albuquerque, he spent his childhood actively involved in Little League and Boy Scouts, where he developed a strong sense of teamwork and leadership. His time spent in Little League sparked his love of sports and athletics that would continue throughout his life. Jimmy attended the "South Valley" schools of Five Points, Ernie Pyle, and Rio Grande, where he was a standout athlete and honor student. It was during his time in high school that he met the love of his life, Barbara Wood, who would become his devoted wife and partner for nearly six decades. They married on July 3, 1965 while both were attending the University of New Mexico.

After completing his education, Jimmy joined his father in the family land surveying business, where he quickly established himself as a skilled and devoted professional. In 1972, he became CEO of Torres Surveying, where he lead the business for over 30 years. His leadership and hard work ensured the company’s success and earned him the respect of clients and colleagues alike. In 1997, with the arrival of his first grandchild, Jimmy decided to retire, dedicating himself fully to his family. He became a devoted caregiver, guiding his three grandchildren through their early years well into their high school days, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Jimmy and Barbara shared their love of travel with their grandchildren, taking them on numerous RV trips across the US, along with many cruises. These adventures forged deep bonds and provided the grandchildren with enriching opportunities they will never forget. 

Travel was one of Jimmy’s greatest passions, and he and Barbara set out on many journeys throughout the globe. From immersing themselves in the great cultures of Europe to basking on tropical beaches or exploring landmarks across the US, Jimmy relished every moment spent exploring the world. His adventurous spirit drove him to experience life to the fullest, always eager to create lasting memories with those he loved. In addition to his love for travel, Jimmy enjoyed a variety of hobbies throughout his life. He was a dedicated reader, spending countless hours absorbed in literature that challenged his mind and expanded his view of the world. Among his many interests was a passion for fast-pitched softball. He played the sport for many years with his friends and was an active member of the Lion’s Club alongside his father-in-law, Ken Wood. Jimmy and Barbara were also well known within the bowling community, participating in many leagues over the years. Jimmy was an active member of the American Business Women's Association(ABWA) for many years, serving as president and in other roles in his local chapter. He enjoyed traveling to and attending regional and national ABWA conferences where he participated in educational seminars and supported candidates at the national level.  

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; two sons — James Charles II and wife, Jeanne C., and William (Bill) David and wife, Jennifer Nicole of Albuquerque; three grandchildren — Alexei James and wife, Victoria (Tori) of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Jett Cameron, of Las Cruces, N.M; and William (Billy) David II, of Phoenix, AZ. Jimmy also leaves behind two brothers, Johnny G., of Rock Hill, SC, and Michael, of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, John B. and Marie P.; two brothers, Arthur F. and Samuel H.; and a sister, Ida Martinez, all of Albuquerque.  

A Visitation will be held Thursday, August 22, 2024, 6:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at FRENCH - Lomas.  Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 23, 2024, beginning with a visitation at 12:30 p.m. followed by the Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m., also at FRENCH - Lomas.  Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  A reception will be held at FRENCH - University following the interment.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Alexei & Jett, and nephews, Ryan J. Torres, Ty Arthur Torres, Samuel H. Torres II, and Timothy (Tim) M. Lake. Honorary pallbearers are his grandson, Billy; brothers, Johnny and Michael; nephews, Clyde R. Martinez, Beau D. Torres, Andrew Krosche, Jason S. Torres, Allen "Guy" Wood, Jr., Kenneth E. "Eddie" Wood, and Douglas V. Lake.; and brothers-in-law, Allen G. Wood, Kenneth N. Wood, and Douglas M. Lake.
