He was born in Crystal City, Texas, down near the border, the only place they had a hospital between Laredo and San Antonio. His parents lived in Carrizo Springs, Texas. His birthday was September 16, 1936 - Mexican Independence Day. He says, "I thought everybody was celebrating my birthday."
After World War II the family moved to Waco, Texas, where Jerry grew up. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin and received a fellowship to the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton where he received a degree as Master of Public Affairs. Then three years in the Air Force at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.
After the Air Force, Jerry and his wife Laura and their children, Heather, Meredith, and Jeffrey, moved to Dallas, where Jerry went to work for the First Southwest Company, an investment management firm. Later he formed his own company, Windsor Association, Inc., another investment company.
Meanwhile, he began raising money for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Greenhill School. Later he helped establish the Winston School for children with learning differences.
He spent his last years in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Laura; daughters, Heather (Larry Jacobson), and Meredith (James Robo); son, Jeffrey (Vicki Munday); grandchildren, Jackie and Lester Jacobson, and Ellen and Michael Robo.
A Celebration of Life will be held at La Vida Llena Retirement Center, 10501 La Grima de Oro NE, on October 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.
