Jerre Joan Singer was born on February 26, 1922, in Silver City, New Mexico, to Neil and Lyna Gibbs. She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Marilouise Marion of Grand Junction, Colorado. Her father was a major construction contractor in the west, building many of New Mexico's large dams and roadways including the Route 66 highway (now I-40) through the Sandia Mountain canyon into Albuquerque.
Jerre passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 15, in Albuquerque a few days short of her 100th birthday. A graduate of St. Vincent's Academy in Albuquerque, Jerre attended college at Mount Saint Joseph's on the Ohio in Cincinnati and then graduated from UNM, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married Ike Singer, Jr., in 1941, and the couple were stationed with the Navy in San Diego during World War II. Ike later served as a Director of Revenue under Governor John Simms and as UNM's Assistant Athletic Director for many years prior to his death in 1988, where he mentored many nationally recognized athletes in various collegiate sports. The couple were parents to three boys, Robert Singer (wife Margaret) and Michael Singer (wife Marie) of Albuquerque, and James Singer (wife Debbie) now of Seal Beach, California. Jerre leaves her three sons, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild surviving her.
From 1954 to 1974, Jerre taught physical education at Jefferson Junior High in Albuquerque. She was also an avid golfer who won numerous tournaments and was active in the Women's Golf Association at Four Hills Country Club.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church at 2621 Vermont St. NE in Albuquerque on Monday, February 28 (following Jerre's 100th birthday) at 11:00 a.m. Jerre will then be interred with her beloved late husband at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being supervised by FRENCH-Wyoming.
