Jere Lyn Blocker, age 82, died peacefully on October 29, 2018. Beloved wife of Col. Norman K. Blocker (U.S. Air Force, retired), loving mother of daughter Norlynn Blocker Price (Harrison) and son Byron Keith Blocker (Debby), irreplaceable “Jer Jer” to grandchildren Cody Blocker (Briana), Ryan Blocker (Victoria), Kelsey Blocker Grommes (Sean), Hannah Price and Abigail Price and to great-grandchildren Kali Blocker and Luke Blocker, Jere was the daughter of the late Rev. Ernest B. Coon and Jimmie Rowe Coon of Tunnel Hill, GA and was preceded in death by her sisters, Lee King and Bette Chesser.
Born in Graham, TX on July 28, 1936 and the daughter of an itinerant Baptist preacher, Jere and her family lived in 15 different towns before she married Norm, an officer in the Air Force. During her marriage, Jere and Norm lived in another 10 different places before settling permanently in Albuquerque in 1979. Jere graduated from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX, obtaining a double degree in theater and secondary education with a concentration in English. She taught middle school drama and English for a few years before devoting all of her time and energy to her family. Years later, with her two children still living at home, Jere obtained a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of New Mexico (with a 4.0 GPA!) and became certified as a speech-language pathologist. Jere served for several years as a speech pathologist, working primarily with children in public schools and in various Native American pueblo communities in the Albuquerque area. She ultimately became the East Region Coordinator of Special Education for Albuquerque Public Schools, the position from which she retired in 2001. Jere was a lifelong learner, amateur political commentator, voracious reader, and grammarian; she loved sharing her expertise in all of these topics with her family at any given opportunity.
Jere’s big personality and even bigger heart will be missed by her family, whom she loved to feed, entertain and shower with gifts, particularly at birthdays and during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays.
A celebration of Jere’s life will take place on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at FRENCH – Wyoming. Reception following. An interment service will take place at a later date at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, TX.
