Jeffrey "Jeff" Gustav Mortensen, husband and father, civil engineer, musician, swimmer, lover of dogs, and old Westerns, died in Albuquerque, NM, on July 21, 2016, at the age of 62, after a courageous encounter with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Jeff was born on March 25, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA, to Gustav and Wilma Mortensen. He earned civil engineering degrees from Drexel University and the University of New Mexico. On May 1, 1982, he married the love of his life, Nancy Smith, in a ceremony at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel. Jeff and Nancy raised their two dear children, Savannah and Jacob. Friends remember Jeff, clipboard in hand, at his children's swim meets, where he arranged his work schedule around their events. He was incredibly proud of his children's endeavors, in the pool and in the classroom.
Known for his high professional standards and work ethic, Jeff was a talented civil engineer. His relationships with colleagues at High Mesa Consulting Group and the accomplishments they shared were a source of great satisfaction. His dedication to his profession and New Mexico's communities are evident by engineering excellence awards he received for designs of the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex and Corrales Elementary School Constructed Wetlands.
